The Dead Cassettes
The Dead Cassettes are an indie rock band based in North California. When I found them, I fell in love with their music, and I wanted to help them make a better brand for their music. I am grateful that I got the opportunity to work with them, they were my first brand design client. The Dead Cassettes wanted their visual identity to feel like it was a flashback from the 80's, with dark backgrounds and neon lights. They also already had a logo, but it wasn't what they wanted. It was too swirly and delicate.
The first step I took was doing research into what other musicians in their genre were doing. I found that most of them were using dark colors, but none of them had the same design elements that The Dead Cassettes wanted. After my research, I began work on their logo.
They really wanted a retro, caught in an old TV feel, so I added a screen texture to their logo. If you look in the upper right hand corner, you can see a small piece of that screen detail. I decided to keep their logo in black and white with white neon accents because their supporting colors were going to be bright and bold neon colors. The font I found for their logo felt very 80's, but also retro. Curly but not in a wimpy way, more "Hey, I got a curve. Keep your judgement ;)."
After I had their logo finalized, I began work on their Electronic Press Kit. To amplify the neon lights, but to also keep everyone's eyes still in their sockets, I laid everything on a black background. For colors, I went with ultraviolet blue and purple, bright yellow, and a faded red. I used those colors for the headers of the sections in their electronic press kit. All other lettering was in white so that it was readable. They had a lot of information that needed to be squeezed into some small sections, which did prove to be a small challenge.
Their new electronic press kit has helped them get more gigs since I've helped them. They have also released more new music and collaborated with some awesome artists. I can't be happier for them and I can't wait to hear more of their work. You can check out their social media by clicking the link below.
